What We Treat

Trauma Treatment That Starts With Safety

Trauma can shape how you sleep, how you feel and how you relate to the people around you — sometimes long after the events themselves. TrueNorth provides structured, trauma-informed outpatient care for adults in Irving, Texas.

You set the pace.

Trauma-Informed Care

What Trauma-Informed Care Means Here

Trauma affects people differently, and there is no schedule that says when difficulties should begin or end.

Two people can live through similar experiences and carry them in very different ways. Some people notice changes immediately. For others, symptoms surface months or years later, often when something in daily life shifts. Noticing symptoms late does not mean you waited too long.

TrueNorth Behavioral Health provides structured outpatient treatment for adults whose trauma-related symptoms have become difficult to manage with weekly therapy alone. Trauma-informed care means that how treatment is delivered matters as much as what is delivered. We work to keep the program predictable, respectful of your pace, and clear about what happens next.

You are not required to describe your history in more detail than you choose, and no one is asked to share in a group before they are ready. What you talk about, and when, is part of the plan you build with your team.

Signs and Symptoms

How Trauma-Related Symptoms Can Show Up

Trauma-related symptoms are not always recognized as trauma. They often look like something else first.

  • Feeling constantly on guard Hypervigilance, startling easily, or scanning for something to go wrong.
  • Avoidance Steering around places, people, conversations or reminders that feel unsafe.
  • Difficulty sleeping Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking unsettled and tired.
  • Emotional numbing Feeling flat or disconnected from people and activities that once mattered.
  • Irritability and reactivity A shorter fuse, tension in the body, or reactions that feel outsized.
  • Difficulty trusting Finding it hard to rely on others, or pulling back from relationships.

These experiences may occur on their own or alongside depression, anxiety, grief or substance use. Only a qualified clinician can determine what is happening and what may help, which is why treatment begins with an individualized clinical assessment.

Our Approach

Safety and Stabilization Come First

Trauma work is paced. Stabilization and skills come before any deeper work, and the approach is chosen with you.

  1. Assessment and orientation

Treatment begins with an individualized clinical assessment of your symptoms, history, current circumstances, safety needs and goals. That assessment, rather than a set protocol, shapes what your plan looks like and which approaches may be appropriate.

  2. Stabilization and skills

Early work focuses on steadiness: sleep, routine, emotional regulation, grounding and practical coping skills you can use outside the program. It continues for as long as it is clinically useful, rather than being a step to get through quickly.

  3. Paced work, when you are ready

Deeper trauma-focused work is approached gradually, and only when you and your treatment team agree that it may be clinically appropriate. Pacing is revisited throughout treatment, and slowing down is always a reasonable option.

Treatment Components

What Treatment May Include

Depending on individual clinical needs, a trauma-informed plan at TrueNorth may draw on:

  • Trauma-informed approaches
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Emotional regulation skills
  • Grounding and coping strategies
  • Psychoeducation
  • Group support
  • Individual sessions
  • Family involvement when appropriate and authorized
  • Psychiatric services when clinically appropriate
  • Medication management when indicated
  • Care coordination
  • Aftercare and discharge planning

Group support is a significant part of both PHP and IOP. Groups are structured and facilitated, and detailed accounts of past events are not the purpose of the work. What many people find steadying is being with other adults who recognize what these symptoms actually feel like.

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management may be integrated with your treatment plan when clinically appropriate. Skills work is practiced inside the program so that it is available to you outside of it.

Co-Occurring Concerns

When Trauma and Substance Use
Occur Together

Trauma-related symptoms and substance use frequently appear together. Alcohol or other substances may begin as a way to sleep or to quiet a reaction, and over time that relief may become its own difficulty.

TrueNorth is designed to address both concerns together rather than asking you to navigate separate systems. Psychiatric symptoms, substance use, relationships, environment and stress are considered as parts of one clinical picture.

Levels of Care

Choosing Between PHP and IOP

TrueNorth offers two levels of structured outpatient care for adults. Both allow you to continue living at home.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is the more structured of the two levels, typically running several days per week. It may be appropriate for adults who need significant therapeutic support and can safely receive treatment without 24-hour inpatient care.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP provides structured treatment at a lower intensity, typically several days per week, with day and evening options where available. It may be appropriate as a step down from PHP or as a step up when weekly therapy is no longer providing enough support.

Admission and level-of-care decisions are based on individualized clinical assessment. If another level would be more appropriate, our team will discuss the available options with you. You can also read the mental health PHP and IOP overview.

Aftercare

Support That Continues After the Program

Treatment does not end the day a program does.

Before you complete PHP or IOP, your team works with you on a continuing-care plan: ongoing outpatient therapy, psychiatric follow-up when appropriate, community supports, and the skills you will keep using. Many people step down gradually, from PHP to IOP and then to weekly outpatient care.

If anxiety or panic is a significant part of what you are experiencing, our anxiety treatment page describes related programming. If you are not certain which level of care fits, you do not have to decide on your own.
