Levels of Care

Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program

A highly structured level of outpatient care for adults who need more support than weekly therapy can provide, while continuing to live at home.

The Basics

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program — almost always shortened to PHP — is the most structured level of outpatient behavioral healthcare. Programming takes place during the day, typically several days per week, and you return home when the program day ends.

PHP sits between inpatient hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment. It is built for adults who need frequent clinical contact and a predictable therapeutic routine, but who can be supported safely without 24-hour care.

TrueNorth's mental health PHP serves adults in Irving, Las Colinas and communities throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area. It is an outpatient program: there is no overnight stay, and TrueNorth does not provide inpatient, residential or detoxification services.

Whether PHP is the right level of care is not something you have to work out on your own. Admission and level-of-care decisions are based on individualized clinical assessment.

Who Mental Health PHP May Be Appropriate For

PHP may be appropriate when symptoms have become difficult to manage in a weekly outpatient setting, or when a change in functioning calls for closer clinical attention. It may also serve as a step down after a hospital stay, when someone is stabilizing but still benefits from daily structure.

It may be worth asking about PHP when:

  • Depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms or mood changes are interfering with daily functioning
  • Weekly therapy and medication management no longer feel like enough support
  • You are transitioning home from an inpatient or residential setting and want continued structure
  • Symptoms have escalated after a significant loss, life change or prolonged period of stress
  • Co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns would benefit from integrated treatment
  • You need help stabilizing while staying connected to home, family and community

PHP is not the right fit for everyone, and it is not an emergency service. If a different level of care is more clinically appropriate, our admissions team will discuss the options available whenever possible.

Inside the Program

What a Day in PHP May Include

No two treatment plans are the same. The services in your plan are set through clinical assessment and reviewed as you progress.

  • Group Therapy Clinically facilitated groups form the backbone of the program day, covering coping skills, emotional regulation and interpersonal patterns.
  • Individual Sessions Time with your therapist to set goals, review progress and work on what group alone does not reach.
  • Psychiatric Services Psychiatric evaluation and medication management, integrated with your overall treatment plan when clinically appropriate.
  • Psychoeducation Structured learning about symptoms, treatment, sleep, stress and the factors that keep difficulties going.
  • Skills Work Practical, repeatable strategies you can use between program days and carry with you after discharge.
  • Care Coordination Communication with your existing providers, when appropriate and authorized, so your care stays joined up.
  • Family Involvement Family sessions and education may be offered with your consent when clinically appropriate.
  • Discharge Planning Planning for what comes after PHP begins early in treatment rather than on your last day.

Programming follows a consistent weekly structure that our admissions team will walk you through before your first day. Individual components are included when clinically appropriate and are revisited as your needs change.

Levels of Care

How PHP Compares

Behavioral healthcare is a continuum, and the right point on it can change over time.

Compared with inpatient hospitalization

Inpatient hospitalization provides 24-hour care in a hospital setting and is generally reserved for acute safety concerns. PHP offers substantial daytime clinical programming without an overnight stay, so you sleep at home, keep the parts of your routine that support you, and practice new skills in the environment you actually live in.

Compared with IOP

Mental health IOP is a lower-intensity level of care — fewer program hours across fewer days — designed for people who need structure but can carry more of their usual responsibilities. Many people begin in PHP and step down to IOP as symptoms stabilize.

Compared with weekly therapy

Traditional outpatient therapy usually means one session a week. PHP adds frequency, group support, psychiatric involvement when clinically appropriate, and a treatment team that reviews your progress together.

How Long People Stay in PHP

There is no standard length of stay. Length of stay is determined by clinical need and is reviewed regularly.

Some people participate for a shorter period before stepping down; others benefit from a longer episode of care. Your treatment team reviews progress with you, and changes to your level of care are discussed rather than imposed.

Insurance authorization requirements can also shape an episode of care. Our team can verify available behavioral health benefits and explain the information your insurer provides. Verification of benefits does not guarantee payment or authorization.

Stepping Down to IOP

For many people, PHP is a starting point rather than a destination. As symptoms stabilize and new skills become more reliable, stepping down to mental health IOP keeps the therapeutic momentum while returning more of the week to work, school and family.

From IOP, the usual next step is ongoing outpatient therapy, psychiatric follow-up where indicated, and community supports. Thoughtful transitions are part of the plan from the beginning — continuity of care matters as much as intensity of care.

Getting Started

How to Start

Three straightforward steps, with our admissions team guiding each one.

  1. Contact TrueNorth

Reach out through our contact page and tell us what has been happening. A first conversation does not obligate you to enter treatment; it simply helps you understand the options.

  2. Insurance Verification

If you plan to use health insurance, our team can verify available behavioral health benefits and explain the information your insurer provides about coverage.

  3. Clinical Assessment

A qualified professional completes an assessment of your symptoms, history, current circumstances, safety needs and goals, then discusses whether PHP, IOP or another level of care may be appropriate.
